Today we take a look at my latest toy the Panasonic 3DO. The Panasonic 3DO launched in 1993 with the retail price of a whopping $669.95, this combined with the lack of any real 3rd party support would ultimately lead to the systems demise. In its short lifespan it spawned a few classic games, such as the original Need For Speed, Myst, and Alone in the Dark. Along with such infamous titles as Plumbers Don't Wear Ties The console had advanced hardware features at the time: an ARM60 32-bit RISC CPU, two custom video co-processors, a custom 16-bit DSP and a custom math co-processor. It also featured 2 megabytes of DRAM, 1 megabyte of VRAM, and a double speed CD-ROM drive for main CD+Gs or Photo cds (and Video cds with an add-on MPEG video module) Production for the 3DO officially ended in 1996. There where rumors of a 64-bit add on that never seen the light of day, as well as its planed successor codenamed the M2. The M2 is a story in its own right, claiming to be 8 times as powerful as the N64... the system ultimately was never released. Though a few prototype machines have made it into circulation. |
